In what exemplifies coordination, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) successfully managed the safe evacuation of 256 individuals after a United Airlines Boeing 787-800 made an emergency air return to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
This was disclosed by Mrs Obiageli Orah, Director, Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, in a statement.
The flight, which departed MMIA at 23:59 on Thursday, January 23, 2025, encountered an in-flight emergency that prompted the pilot to issue a distress call at 01:20.
Within minutes, FAAN’s Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS), Aviation Medical Services, and Aviation Security (AVSEC) teams were mobilised and on standby, prepared to ensure passenger safety.
The aircraft landed smoothly at 03:22 and taxied to Gate D31, where the rescue teams were already stationed. By 03:37, the aircraft door was opened, enabling the safe disembarkation of 245 passengers and 11 crew members.
While the majority of those onboard escaped unscathed, four passengers and two crew members sustained serious injuries, and 27 passengers along with five crew members reported minor injuries.
The Aviation Medical Services acted promptly, providing on-site first aid to those with minor injuries, who were discharged shortly thereafter.
Passengers with more severe injuries were stabilised and transported to Duchess Hospital in Ikeja for specialised care, while others were accommodated in nearby hotels for their comfort and recovery.
“Our rescue teams were fully prepared and acted with precision and care to ensure that everyone onboard was brought to safety.
This operation reflects the unwavering dedication of our staff and the effectiveness of our emergency response protocols”, the FAAN Spokesperson noted.
However, preliminary inspections revealed no significant damage to the aircraft, which is currently under investigation to determine the cause of the emergency return. FAAN assured the public that updates will be provided as more details emerge.
The FAAN Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, commended the efforts of all teams involved, stating, “The professionalism and swift action of our rescue teams saved lives today. Incidents like this remind us why continuous training, preparation, and vigilance are crucial in aviation safety. We remain committed to world-class safety standards for the benefit of all airport users.”
The seamless coordination of FAAN’s rescue operations, stakeholders note, highlights the agency’s readiness to handle emergencies and protect lives.
From ARFFS and AVSEC to Aviation Medical Services, every department played a vital role in ensuring the best possible outcome for all passengers and crew onboard.
