Aviation sector regulator, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has waded into the controversy surrounding the status of Arik Air’s operations, clarifying that three of the flag carrier’s airplanes were grounded and not its entire operations.
According to a statement signed by Michael Achimugu the Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of NCAA, the action against the airline was powered by the need to obey a recent Supreme Court ruling which mandated the attachment of the planes as part of legal proceedings.
“Contrary to some reports, neither the NCAA nor the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has suspended Arik Air’s overall operations.
“The grounded aircraft, identified by their registration numbers 5N-MJF, 5N-MJQ, and 5N-BKX, are specifically affected by the court’s decision.
“The NCAA, in its regulatory capacity, is adhering to the Supreme Court’s ruling while ensuring that all aviation safety and regulatory standards are maintained”, Achimugu added.
He said the statement sought to emphasise that Arik Air’s flight operations have not been halted as the airline continues to operate its remaining fleet according to its regular schedule.
“The NCAA remains committed to facilitating safe and efficient air travel, and we assure the public that the situation is being handled with the utmost care to minimize any inconvenience.
“We appreciate the public’s understanding and patience as Arik Air navigates this period. The NCAA will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide any necessary updates” the NCAA Spokesman stated.
