As glasses are clinked globally on the momentous occasion of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) 80th anniversary, the Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (NATCA), an affiliate of the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (IFATCA), has joined in the celebration.
In a statement, the body extended its warmest congratulations to the global civil aviation community as the celebration marks eight decades since the unique Chicago Convention laid the foundation for a safer, more connected world through aviation.
NATCA recalled that the Chicago Convention, signed in 1944, outlined a revolutionalising vision for civil aviation, emphasising its potential to foster global friendship, understanding and collaboration.
The convention advocated for principles that ensure safe, orderly development and equal access to international air transport services.
Over time, these principles evolved into the globally recognized Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), which have made aviation the safest mode of transportation worldwide.
Reflecting on 80 years of ICAO’s impact, NATCA commended the remarkable evolution of civil aviation. The doubling of global air traffic every 15 years stands as a testament to the sector’s rapid growth and innovation.
“This unprecedented transformation would not have been possible without the dedication of air traffic controllers; the unseen hands whose expertise, resilience, and precision keep the skies safe,” said Edino Amos Ilemona, President of NATCA.
Currently, approximately 126,000 flights take off and land daily across the globe, connecting people and transporting goods. However, this remarkable growth also presents challenges.
Projections suggest a doubling of this traffic within the next 15 years, necessitating robust strategies to ensure continued safety and efficiency.
NATCA, in the statement, recognised the proactive efforts of ICAO, particularly through its Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP), which serves as a framework to address these challenges.
The association strongly advocates for all aviation stakeholders to align their policies with ICAO’s strategic objectives.
These objectives focus on creating an interoperable, seamless airspace system capable of meeting future demands.
“NATCA remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing safety and navigation efficiency.
“We will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to develop innovative solutions that uphold the highest standards of air traffic management.”
NATCA reiterated its strong support and celebrates the enduring legacy of cooperation that has defined the past 80 years of global civil aviation.
The association also calls for strengthened partnerships to tackle emerging challenges, ensuring aviation remains a cornerstone of global connectivity.
