To bolster flight safety, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has commenced a two-week on-the-job training (OJT) exercise for its Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEPs) under the Department of Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) Power Systems.

This was disclosed in a statement by Abdullahi Musa, the Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NAMA.

The capacity-building initiative, taking place concurrently at NAMA’s stations in Lagos, Abuja and Kano, covers all CNS power facilities managed by the agency.

The intensive practical training is aimed at equipping ATSEPs with updated skills in modern techniques, procedures, and technologies necessary for the efficient maintenance and installation of critical systems.

Trainees will work under the close supervision of seasoned professionals as they gain hands-on experience with core systems such as Automatic Mains Failure (AMF), Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs), Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units, solar power systems, electrical installations, cooling systems, and generating sets.

The programme is designed to broaden participants’ technical expertise with practical activities including welding, installation of air-conditioning compressors, topping up of refrigerants, as well as installation and maintenance of solar power infrastructure.

Additional areas of focus include preventive and corrective maintenance of UPS systems, inverters, AVRs, and overhauling of power generators.

Speaking at the opening of the training, the Managing Director of NAMA, Engr Farouk Ahmed Umar, underscored the importance of the exercise in strengthening the agency’s technical capacity.

He noted that the training reflects management’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the skills of its technical and operational workforce.

“This would ensure that our communication, navigation, and surveillance infrastructure across the country continue to perform seamlessly, efficiently, and optimally in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs),” he stated.

Engineer Farouk expressed confidence that the practical knowledge acquired during the training will contribute significantly to maintaining uninterrupted power supply across NAMA’s installations nationwide, an essential component of air travel safety.
