Dr. Richard Aisuebeogun, a distinguished aviation expert has called for a strategic focus on route development and the optimisation of airport revenue to ensure the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s air transport sector.
Dr. Aisuebeogun, who previously served as the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and now chairs the annual Airport Business and Expo Summit (ABSE).
In his compelling address, he highlighted the myriad challenges confronting the industry, which include suboptimal policy decisions and the global economic recession, both of which threaten the sector’s ability to thrive.
Aisuebeogun said: “Despite these challenges, there remains a high level of expectation from both national and regional stakeholders for the aviation sector to provide an efficient and effective air link that can catalyze economic growth.”
He acknowledged the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the sector through various strategic programmes but cautioned against the unrestrained expansion of airports without thorough economic viability assessments.
“The success of these airports hinges on their ability to meet the economic sustainability index and usability standards. Route development and revenue optimization must be integral parts of the airport development process from the outset to ensure long-term viability”, he added.
Further stressing the importance of government investment, Dr. Aisuebeogun underscored the necessity of setting realistic expectations for airport managers.
He commended the recent revision of revenue deductions from aviation agencies by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo, SAN, but emphasised that continued funding was crucial to support the development and maintenance of airport infrastructure.
“Our airports must be adequately funded to meet the growing demands of the industry,” he stated.
“While we expect airport managers to optimize revenue, it’s equally important to recognize the constraints imposed by the current economic climate and the complexities involved in managing new airports”, he noted.
As Nigeria’s aviation industry evolves, Dr. Aisuebeogun’s emphasis on strategic route development and revenue optimization provides essential guidance for policymakers and industry stakeholders dedicated to enhancing the nation’s air transport infrastructure and fostering economic growth.
