As institutions around the globe celebrated this year’s World Cleanup Day, Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), managers of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2), joined the global movement and used the opportunity to push for a cleaner planet.

The terminal operator, in a statement, said it joined the movement as a way of reinforcing its unflinching commitment to environmental sustainability.

This year’s event, held on Friday, September 20th, united communities worldwide in a collective mission to tackle litter and promote a cleaner, healthier planet for present and future generations.

World Cleanup Day aims to inspire 5% of the world’s population to initiate a lasting societal transformation in waste management practices.

BASL’s support for the global agenda saw it organise awareness and cleanup activities at MMA2, bringing together drivers, staff and senior management.

Commenting on the initiative, BASL’s Head of Safety, Nafisat Adeniran, highlighted the company’s proactive approach:

“In our own way of contributing to the global goal of engaging 5% of the world’s population, MMA2 held awareness events for all MMA2 drivers. We educated them on effective waste management within and around the terminal, emphasising proper disposal methods and ensuring their vehicles are equipped with waste collection baskets. We also rallied our drivers and senior management to physically clean the drivers’ park, demonstrating leadership commitment to sustainability.”

Mrs. Adeniran further reaffirmed BASL’s eco-friendly initiatives, stating, “MMA2 remains committed to environmental sustainability through various programs, from specialized Foreign Object Debris (FOD) waste management on the apron to general waste recycling on the landside.

Participating in World Cleanup Day aligns with our mission to join millions of volunteers globally in tackling the mismanaged waste crisis and paving the way for a waste-free world for future generations.”

Also commenting, Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, Head of Corporate Communications at BASL, emphasised the importance of sustainability in aviation:

“We recognise that a clean and healthy environment is vital not only for the aviation industry but for the entire ecosystem. At BASL, sustainability is woven into the fabric of our operations, and World Cleanup Day provides us with an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to maintaining a greener planet.

“Through this initiative, we aim to inspire individuals and organizations alike to prioritise environmental cleanliness for the benefit of future generations.”

In addition to their participation in World Cleanup Day, BASL has implemented a series of eco-conscious practices aimed at reducing waste and carbon emissions.

These initiatives include; Implementing efficient waste management systems within the terminal, including robust recycling programs; Conducting regular environmental awareness programmes to engage and involve the public in their mission for sustainability.

World Cleanup Day has evolved into a powerful global movement, mobilising millions of volunteers across nearly every nation and territory on the planet.

What began as a simple act of cleaning has now become a unifying force, bringing together people and organisations from diverse backgrounds to work towards a shared goal—a cleaner, more sustainable world.

Bi-Courtney’s commitment was evident in the cleanup event it organised at the terminal, where volunteers, including the senior management team, came together to restore the area’s natural beauty by collecting waste and ensuring it was disposed of properly.
