The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said the fire incident recorded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on September 6 was caused by lithium inverter battery installation at a basement.

A statement by FAAN’s director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua said the firefighters from the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS) of the airport took immediate action and put out the inferno.

“At approximately 0723 hours this morning (Sept 6, 2023), a suspected electrical spark at the baggage hall ceiling caused the smoke incident that was reported at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, located in Ikeja, Lagos,” the statement read in part.

“The source of the smoke was identified as burning lithium inverter battery installation at the basement.”

It said “the terminal building was promptly evacuated due to the smoke that had permeated some areas of the facility,” after it was put off.
