In a strategic move to further fortify the nation’s aviation security architecture, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku has commissioned Arms-bearing 120 officers of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) Special Force for onward deployment to various airports across the country.
At the commissioning of 30 personnel at the International wing of Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, on Monday, Mrs. Kuku highlighted the significance of aligning Nigeria’s aviation security team with global standards.
She remarked, “This is for them to help us in terms of securing our assets, lives, and the people within the aviation environment, specifically at the airports. It’s remarkable for us. We’re happy that we spent significant time training and identifying the individuals for this squad.”
She emphasized the professionalism of the squad and assured that they would collaborate closely with other security agencies.
Addressing concerns about the potential use of excessive force, she encouraged passengers and airport users to maintain orderly conduct, reiterating that the arms signify their elite status to complement existing aviation security staff.
Kuku added, “We aim to deter illegal activities without using force unless necessary, and when required, they will coordinate with other security agencies.”
According to her, “The personnel will be deployed initially to five international airports: Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu. It is a recurring training program. In Lagos, we have about 30 of them.”
She highlighted the squad’s readiness and the significance of their role in enhancing airport security.
Expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu for their support, she acknowledged the challenges faced and overcame to reach this milestone.
Kuku also spoke on the close collaboration with other security agencies, noting her recent meeting with the Chief of Air Staff in Abuja.
Looking ahead, she outlined the next phase: “The coordination phase involves campaigns to say no to corruption at our airports. The special squad is here to deter unscrupulous elements and ensure that airport staff conduct themselves appropriately for our passengers’ safety.”
