The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a formal clarification regarding a viral video circulating online, which captured heated exchanges between its staff and a cargo agent at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal in Lagos.
The authority, in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs Obiageli Orah, explained that contrary to earlier reports, the individual involved in the altercation was not a passenger, as initially speculated.
She said the person was a cargo agent engaging in illegal activities within the airport.
Mrs Orah maintained that the agent, who was attempting to evade payment of the prescribed cargo charges, displayed aggressive behaviour, damaged airport equipment and significantly strained FAAN’s resources in the process.
She totally debunked allegations of molestation and bribery demands from its staff, emphasising that the issue was a case of misconduct and blackmail on the part of the agent, with FAAN staff merely enforcing the correct levies in line with standard operational procedures.
The statement urged all cargo agents and the public to respect the rules governing cargo operations at the MMIA.
The authority further stressed that all cargo activities should be carried out in the designated cargo terminals, using proper vehicles and personnel as enshrined in the rules of engagement.
Mrs Orah further emphasised that FAAN’s cargo policies are designed to ensure that the airport operates in accordance with international best practices, prioritising safety, preventing damage to facilities, and enhancing customer service.
To further enforce compliance, FAAN imposes a fine of ₦5,000 (Five Thousand Naira) for cargo operations that do not adhere to regulations, particularly in cases of; failure to use designated cargo terminals and damage caused to airport carousels or other equipment due to improper cargo handling.
The authority explained that these measures are necessary to protect airport infrastructure, minimize disruptions, and ensure the safety of both passengers and personnel.
The authority reiterated its commitment to clear and transparent communication regarding its policies and procedures, just as it called on the public, cargo agents and airport users to abide by these rules to avoid similar incidents in the future.
“We remain focused on delivering a safe and efficient airport experience for everyone. The cooperation of all stakeholders is key to ensuring the smooth operation of our facilities,” Mrs. Orah said.
