Nigerian airports, predominantly those operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), have recorded marked improvements in airfield operations and apron safety, according to findings from the 2025 national assessment.

The results were unveiled at the conclusion of the 1st National Joint Apron Safety Workshop, organised by FCI International and held at the NIGAV Expo Event Centre yesterday.

The communique, issued by the Marshaller Consultative Forum, highlighted that airfield operations across major Nigerian airports have improved significantly compared to previous years.

Mr Fortune Idu, convener of the workshop and forum member, noted that the progress is evident in the successful passage of NCAA safety audits and certification processes, particularly at Port Harcourt International Airport and other key airports nationwide.

On behalf of the forum, Idu commended FAAN Managing Director, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, for driving these improvements.

He noted that Kuku has effectively reduced congestion on airport aprons by ensuring strict compliance with standard operating procedures, while simultaneously enhancing marshaller welfare through regular eye checks, ongoing training, and provision of essential tools.

Addressing participants at the workshop, FAAN’s General Manager of Operations, Mrs Joke Olatunji, described the Authority as a safety-focused organisation.

She emphasized that under Kuku’s leadership, safety has become an integral part of FAAN’s brand, stating, “Safe airside will give a good flying experience.” Olatunji underscored the critical role of airfield operators, noting that operations cannot commence unless the airside meets the highest safety standards.

She praised Mr Fortune Idu for convening the workshop, which brought together government and private sector stakeholders, and highlighted FAAN’s responsiveness to safety reports from the Marshaller Consultative Forum.

Since the forum’s inception, Olatunji explained, Kuku has taken marshaller feedback seriously, promoting strict adherence to standard operating procedures and encouraging all stakeholders to report any safety infringements without hesitation.

The 2025 assessment reinforces FAAN’s commitment to operational excellence and positions Nigerian airports as safer, more efficient, and internationally credible hubs.

The workshop and resulting safety improvements signal a new era in apron management, where safety, compliance, and continuous improvement remain central to aviation operations across the country.
