In a determined effort to restore order and integrity at Nigeria’s airports, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has intensified its campaign against indiscipline and illicit activities at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
Spearheaded by the Headquarters Taskforce Against Indiscipline and Illicit Activities, the initiative amplifies FAAN’s commitment to addressing the pervasive issues of touting, rent-seeking, and airport extortion that have long plagued Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The taskforce, established by FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, represents a bold step towards transforming the airport experience for all passengers. “Our mission is clear: to eradicate all forms of illegal activities that tarnish the reputation of our airports,” stated
Mr. Henry Agbebire, Co-chair of the Taskforce and Director of Special Duties at FAAN. “We have transitioned from sporadic, ineffective raids to a sustained, technology-driven strategy, utilizing CCTV cameras and body cams to ensure thorough monitoring and enforcement.”
The campaign is a direct response to the directive from the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who has prioritized elevating service quality at Nigerian airports.
“The Managing Director has set an ambitious goal for enhancing customer experience, and our taskforce plays a crucial role in achieving this vision,” Agbebire emphasized.
A key component of this initiative is enhancing passenger engagement and empowerment.
The taskforce has strategically placed QR codes throughout the airport, allowing travelers to report any suspicious or illicit activities instantly.
This move is part of a broader strategy that includes close collaboration with various security agencies to foster a safer and more disciplined airport environment.
The visibility of the campaign was prominently showcased at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
In the baggage area of the E-Wing arrival hall, electronic screens displayed compelling messages such as “SAY NO TO AIRPORT TOUTING,” “SAY NO TO AIRPORT HARASSMENT,” and “SAY NO TO INDISCIPLINE AND ILLICIT PRACTICES.” Additionally, roll-up banners, posters, flyers, and stickers were placed in strategic locations to reinforce the campaign’s messages.
Through its comprehensive and technology-driven approach, the taskforce is making significant strides in combating the scourge of indiscipline and illicit activities at Nigeria’s airports.
This campaign is poised to continue its relentless efforts until these issues are thoroughly eradicated, ensuring a safer, more efficient, and enjoyable airport experience for all passengers.
