The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, is set to transform into a world-class aviation hub following the recent approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for a comprehensive upgrade of its facilities.

Announcing the development, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, said the project would completely reimagine Nigeria’s busiest airport terminal and elevate the country’s aviation experience to global standards.

“With the recent approval from the Federal Executive Council, I am pleased to announce that Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) will undergo major upgrades to transform it into a world-class facility,” she said.

The upgrade, she explained, would be executed in phases and cover six major projects, all aimed at improving passenger experience, expanding operational capacity, and strengthening MMIA’s position as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.

The projects include: Rehabilitation and Expansion of Terminal 1 (T1): Extensive upgrades will be carried out on the airport’s busiest terminal, including a full facelift of the exterior façade, revamped interior finishes, and modernised plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems.

Again, there is the Expansion of Terminal 2 (T2) to accommodate more wide-body aircraft, with extensions to the boarding bridge (finger) and apron. Existing hangars within the expansion zone will also be relocated to allow smooth execution of the project.

A modern and efficient access road network will be developed to ease congestion and improve connectivity to the airport.

More so, a Skywalk will link the car park building to T2, while a new connection building will integrate T1 and T2, unifying the terminals into a single complex and improving passenger flow.

To ensure seamless operations during the rehabilitation period, a temporary departure hall will be set up to provide a clean, well-organised and comfortable space for travellers.

The central square in front of the terminals will be redesigned to create a welcoming first impression for arriving passengers, reflecting the pride and spirit of the nation.

Mrs. Kuku assured that the upgrades would not only modernise the airport’s infrastructure but also set a new benchmark for the entire aviation sector in Nigeria.

“We are reimagining the future of the MMIA, not just rebuilding a terminal, but elevating Nigeria’s aviation experience to global standards. The new T1 will offer faster check-in, smarter security, brighter lounges, and better shopping, all designed for you,” she said.

The FAAN boss added that the project is a “future-focused infrastructure upgrade and a solemn commitment to every traveller passing through this national gateway.”

“Your understanding and support today are helping us build the MMIA of tomorrow, more vibrant, convenient, and world-class, truly the pride of the nation. We aim to make every departure and return a moment to look forward to,” she emphasised.

The upgraded MMIA, when completed, is expected to meet the highest global standards, solidifying its place as a premier aviation hub in West Africa and a major source of national pride.
