Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has issued a directive mandating foreign airlines operating outbound flights from Nigeria to source their in-flight meals from local caterers.
The move is part of a deeper effort to promote the Nigerian aviation sector and stimulate economic growth by boosting the local catering industry.
In a letter dated October 15, 2024, signed by H.T. Ejibunu, Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, and addressed to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the minister outlined the new policy which will take effect from January 1, 2025.
“I am directed by the Honourable Minister of Aviation to inform you of his decision to mandate all outbound flights from Nigeria, particularly those operated by foreign airlines, to utilize the services of local caterers for on-board meals,” the letter stated.
The directive, stakeholders noted, was a strategic step towards supporting indigenous businesses, enhancing job creation and showcasing Nigeria’s culinary heritage to international travelers.
The ministry emphasised that all foreign airlines must ensure full compliance with the new policy by the set date, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering domestic economic participation within the aviation sector.
By leveraging the initiative, players infer that the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development seeks to create a sustainable ecosystem where local businesses can thrive, positioning Nigeria as a hub for aviation services that go beyond basic air transport, while also aligning with global practices that prioritize the use of local resources to strengthen national economies.
