Flight operations involving a brand-new Embraer 195-E2 aircraft belonging to Air Peace Limited were thrown into disarray on Friday, Boxing Day, following a ground handling incident at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The disruption occurred after a luggage conveyor belt vehicle operated by the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) reportedly collided with the aircraft’s engine shortly after passengers had completed boarding.
The aircraft, registered as 5N-BYH, was preparing to operate Flight P47750 from Lagos to Accra when the incident happened.
Aviation sources said the impact caused visible damage to the engine area, leaving a dent and tear on the Thrust Reverser Cowling, a critical component of the engine cover.

In line with safety protocols, the aircraft was immediately grounded to allow for technical inspection and assessment.
All passengers already on board were asked to disembark, resulting in delays and widespread operational disruptions.
Sources confirmed that nine scheduled flights allocated to the aircraft for the day were affected, forcing several passengers to be stranded, delayed, or rebooked on alternative services.
The incident is considered particularly significant as the Embraer 195-E2 involved is among Air Peace’s newest fleet acquisitions, underscoring the scale of the operational and financial setback.
Beyond passenger inconvenience, industry insiders note that engine-related damage on modern commercial aircraft often attracts hefty repair costs, running into millions of dollars.
Earlier in the year, a similar engine cowling incident reportedly cost the airline about $3.5 million to fix, highlighting the financial risks associated with ramp and ground handling errors.
Industry observers have again raised concerns over ground handling safety standards at Nigeria’s busiest airports, pointing to recurring issues such as ageing equipment, inadequate personnel training, and lapses in ramp safety procedures.
They warn that such incidents not only disrupt airline schedules but also erode passenger confidence and impose avoidable costs on operators.
No injuries were reported. Investigations are expected to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the collision, including equipment condition and adherence to standard operating procedures.
