The management of Lufthansa German Airlines has offered lucid details as to why its flight LH595 suffered an operational hitch at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, on July 23.
The airline, in a statement, explained that the incident, which arose from weather-related safety considerations, led to a reduction in the maximum take-off weight, necessitating the offloading of baggage and the exclusion of some passengers from boarding. Lufthansa said the decision was made in strict compliance with international safety standards and the valid Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for runways 04 and 22 at NAIA.
According to Lufthansa Group Station Manager, Mr. Thorsten Glaeser, the flight crew anticipated heavy rain and strong tailwinds on runway 04, prompting the captain to prioritize safety by adjusting the aircraft’s load.
“Safety is always our top priority.
“Unfortunately, this adjustment meant that not only baggage but also some passengers could not be accommodated on the flight. We regret the inconvenience caused and thank all affected passengers for their understanding”, he said.
The airline added that it promptly activated its contingency plans, providing rebooking options, ground transportation, meals, and hotel accommodation through its partner, Continental Hotels.
Of the 46 affected passengers, 42 accepted hotel accommodation, while four chose to return home.
Thirty-four passengers were rebooked on the next available flights, with others opting for refunds or making independent arrangements.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) security personnel (Avsec) worked closely with Lufthansa staff to maintain calm during the situation, which initially caused some frustration among passengers.
“All guests are entitled to their full passenger rights, which can be claimed via Lufthansa Customer Services,” Glaeser added, while thanking FAAN for its support in facilitating necessary repairs and ensuring a smooth resolution.
The airline said all affected passengers have since departed Abuja on alternative connections, underscoring its commitment to customer care even in the face of unforeseen operational challenges.
