Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has called for consistent and constructive dialogue among all aviation unions, urging them to work closely with government agencies, regulatory bodies and airline operators to address the challenges facing the sector.
He also commended the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) for their commitment to professional excellence and safety in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Keyamo made these remarks during the National Administrative Council (NAC) and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of NAAPE in Abuja.
He was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole,
He highlighted that when unionism is centered on problem-solving, it can become a powerful stabilizing force in critical sectors like aviation, which are essential to the economy.
In his keynote address, Keyamo urged NAAPE and other unions to focus on fostering constructive dialogue with stakeholders, while prioritizing the advancement of professional development and safety standards.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to supporting initiatives that enhance training in line with global standards.
Highlighting the high level of expertise required in the roles of pilots and engineers, the Minister stated, “It is in the nation’s best interest to foster a highly skilled workforce,” underscoring the critical importance of safety in the aviation sector.
He added, “Safety is a non-negotiable element of the aviation industry, and it must always be at the forefront of our operations.”
While acknowledging the financial challenges faced by airlines, which impact operational budgets, recruitment, and salary structures, Keyamo advocated for a pragmatic, forward-thinking approach to unionism.
“Rather than viewing these challenges as adversarial, unions and management should adopt a problem-solving mindset.
By working together to find innovative solutions—such as flexible work arrangements, cost-saving initiatives, and shared revenue incentives—unions can help prevent layoffs and business closures,” he said.
He further assured that the Ministry is working on policies that support investment, infrastructure development, and workforce training in aviation.
The Acting Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, also delivered remarks at the event, stressing the importance of multisectoral collaboration for achieving economic success.
Represented by Mr. Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, Najomo highlighted the indispensable role of unions in maintaining equilibrium within the industry.
He asserted that if absolute powers were given to the employers, there would be chaos.
He commended NAAPE for its contributions and assured the association that NCAA, under his leadership, is committed to collaboration with unions. “The management is with you all the time. Do not lose your aluta spirit or sell your members out,” Najomo said.
In his welcome address, NAAPE President, Comrade Galadima Abednego, noted that the event aimed to promote robust management and employer relations.
He acknowledged the global economic struggles, including inflation and job loss, stressing that social dialogue between management and employees is crucial for resolving issues and improving productivity.
He also raised concerns about industry challenges, such as climate change and high aviation fuel costs, which continue to impact the sector.
The event, themed “The Imperative of Unionism in a Struggling Economy,” was well-attended by key industry stakeholders, including leaders from the Nigeria Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA).
