To improve the welfare and professional security of aviation workers, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has unveiled a Loss of Licence Insurance Scheme for Nigerian pilots and aircraft engineers.

The scheme, launched in partnership with First Standard Insurance Brokers, marks a major advancement in labour protection within Nigeria’s aviation industry.

It is designed to provide financial compensation for aviation professionals who lose their licences due to medical incapacity or other qualifying conditions that prevent them from continuing their duties.

Captain Bunmi Gindeh, President of NAAPE, said the initiative followed months of consultation and reflects the Association’s resolve to align with global aviation standards.

“Loss of Licence insurance has long been standard practice in developed aviation markets. Our members face unique occupational risks that can abruptly end their careers. This scheme ensures that no pilot or engineer is left without financial support if they are declared medically unfit to continue,” he said.

According to him, the initiative is not just about welfare—it’s about strengthening safety culture and morale across the aviation ecosystem.

“By introducing this coverage in Nigeria, we are protecting professionals and their families while giving them the peace of mind to focus on maintaining the highest safety standards,” Gindeh added.

He further noted that NAAPE is working to make the cover affordable and accessible to all members, including those in private and charter services, adding that the long-term goal is to standardise welfare benefits across the aviation industry.

Also speaking, Engineer Mudi Muhammad, NAAPE Deputy President, said the programme is a response to real-life cases where professionals were left vulnerable after losing their licences.

“We have seen colleagues face financial hardship due to medical disqualification. This insurance ensures that no Nigerian pilot or engineer will face such a challenge alone. It provides a safety net that every aviation professional deserves,” he said.

Aviation stakeholders have hailed the move as a trailblazing initiative, describing it as a turning point for professional protection and confidence within the industry.

The scheme aligns Nigeria with best global practices, where such insurance is a standard crew benefit provided by airlines or professional bodies.

NAAPE said details of enrolment, premium structures, and eligibility will be released soon.

It will also embark on nationwide sensitisation workshops to educate members about the benefits and registration process.

With this development, NAAPE cements its position as a champion of professional welfare and aviation safety, ensuring that Nigeria’s pilots and engineers are not only equipped to serve but also protected when life’s uncertainties arise.
