Auwal Dankode, an employee of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO), has emerged as the winner of the Unsung Hero category at the Pride of Ground Handling Awards, held during the Ground Handling International (GHI) Conference in Barcelona, Spain.
Dankode was celebrated for his remarkable honesty when he returned $10,000 discovered during a cabin cleaning operation at his station in Kano International Airport.
His exemplary act earned him the admiration of a panel of international judges, who selected him as the winner from a pool of six finalists representing different countries.
The cabin cleaner’s story gained widespread attention both locally and internationally after he returned the substantial sum, which was found in a seat just vacated by passengers on an Egypt Air flight.
His action sparked praise across social media platforms and was shared by prominent Nigerian figures, highlighting his rare brand of integrity.
The recognition at the GHI awards further flaunts the global impact of his story.
NAHCO has since honoured Dankode with numerous rewards, including cash incentives, a double promotion and an appointment as the company’s brand ambassador.
In addition, the National Orientation Agency named him “Nigerian of the Week” on August 28th, commending his staunch honesty and accountability.
Many Nigerians on social media have lauded Dankode’s extraordinary integrity, particularly in light of the challenging economic realities marked by the naira’s current exchange rate against the dollar.
The Pride of Ground Handling Awards, organized annually by GHI, celebrates outstanding achievements in the aviation sector.
This year’s conference, regarded as the aviation ground handling community’s premier event, brought together nearly 1,000 stakeholders, including over 110 airline representatives from more than 60 countries, showcasing the industry’s excellence on a global stage.
