The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has announced the successful installation of new Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) systems in 26 airports nationwide, a move described as a major step in modernising the country’s aeronautical communication infrastructure.
Speaking at a sensitisation workshop on the newly installed systems in Lagos, the Director of Air Traffic Services, Mr. John Tayo, said the development underscores NAMA’s mandate to provide safe, efficient, and reliable air navigation services.
“The modernization of AFTN is another demonstration of NAMA’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and technological advancement in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
However, the true value of this infrastructure lies in how well we operate and maintain it,” Tayo said, while urging participants to approach the training with professionalism and dedication.
According to him, the new AFTN systems—though based on the traditional X.25 protocol—have been designed to leverage more robust global satellite facilities.
This, he explained, provides improved reliability, wider coverage, and enhanced message transmission efficiency.
Beyond serving aeronautical communication operations, the system also functions as a dependable alternative to the Air Traffic Service Message Handling System (AMHS).
Highlighting its importance, Tayo said AFTN remains the backbone of global aeronautical communication.
He noted that the system supports safe aircraft operations by ensuring timely dissemination of urgent messages and meteorological information, enhances operational efficiency through faster communication between Air Traffic Control and other centres, and guarantees global interoperability through its standardized protocols.
“With installations across 26 airports, Nigeria now boasts an extensive and resilient communication infrastructure to support aviation growth,” he added.
The one-day workshop was designed to familiarise technical and operational staff with the features and functionalities of the new AFTN systems, strengthen capacity for system management and troubleshooting, and share best practices for effective utilisation.
Tayo also emphasised that aeronautical communication is central to NAMA’s vision of delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective air navigation services.
“Together, let us build a communication system that stands as the pride of Africa and meets the highest global standards,” he declared as he formally opened the workshop.
