To uphold Nigeria’s aviation safety standards, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended two ValueJet pilots following a serious safety protocol breach at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

According to a statement by Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, when a ValueJet flight crew initiated departure procedures from the domestic terminal without obtaining mandatory pre-departure clearance.

The oversight, described as a significant breach of standard operating procedures, posed potential risks to ground operations and other airport users.

Consequently, the NCAA promptly suspended the licences of both the pilot, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and the co-pilot/First Officer, Ivan Oloba, pending the outcome of a full-scale investigation.

“The NCAA views this incident with utmost seriousness,” Achimugu stated. “This swift enforcement action is part of our unwavering commitment to ensuring that Nigeria’s aviation sector remains safe, secure, and compliant with both national and international standards.”

The regulatory body reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for safety violations and reassured stakeholders that it will continue to strengthen oversight, enforce compliance, and enhance public confidence in the nation’s air transport system.

In response to the development, ValueJet Airlines confirmed the incident and expressed its full support for the ongoing investigation.

In a statement released by the airline’s management, ValueJet emphasised that it considers safety non-negotiable and operates in strict adherence to both regulatory procedures and global aviation safety standards.

“We acknowledge the seriousness of this incident and are cooperating fully with the NCAA.

“The crew involved have been immediately removed from active duty as part of our standard safety protocol and we have commenced an internal investigation to determine the root cause and implement corrective measures”, the airline said.

ValueJet also extended its appreciation to the NCAA for its swift and professional response, pledging to work closely with the Authority to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

“We remain committed to accountability and continuous improvement across all levels of our operations.“Our passengers’ safety, comfort, and confidence remain our top priority”, the flag carrier added.

According to aviation enthusiasts, the coordinated response from both the regulator and the airline highlights a shared commitment to ensuring the safety, reliability and credibility of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
