The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has launched electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations across the nation’s five international airports, Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu.
This, stakeholders note, marks a historic first in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The deployment, according to NiMet, represents a major leap toward sustainability and operational efficiency, which firmly aligns, the federal government’s economic revival blueprint that prioritises clean energy and climate resilience.
The EVs, capable of covering up to 200 kilometers on a single charge, will be powered by dedicated charging stations at each airport, creating what NiMet describes as “a practical, eco-friendly ecosystem for daily operations.”

NiMet’s Director General and Chief ExecutiveOfficer, Professor Charles Anosike, said the initiative highlights the agency’s commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation.
“This milestone demonstrates NiMet’s resolve to modernize its operations, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s climate action goals,” he stated.
According to him, by adopting EVs, NiMet expects to reduce operational costs, minimise fuel-related delays and enhance overall service delivery.
The quiet, low-maintenance vehicles will improve logistics efficiency while cutting emissions and noise pollution, benefits that align with global sustainability benchmarks.
“This initiative is more than a technological upgrade; it’s a forward-looking investment in Nigeria’s green.
“It positions NiMet not only as a leader in meteorology but also as a champion of environmental transformation in the aviation sector”, the NiMet boss added.
