Efforts to deepen scientific collaboration and strengthen Nigeria’s environmental monitoring capacity have been concretised as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), recently entered into a formal partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The alliance was championed by the Vice Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed and the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike.

Speaking at the MoU ceremony, Professor Anosike emphasised the transformative power of science and innovation in shaping national progress.

“Our collaboration with CERT-ABU will support joint research in climate science, enhance radiological monitoring, including in aviation and foster climate-smart agricultural practices.

Together, we are leveraging science to improve livelihoods and build national resilience,” he said.

Professor Anosike noted that meteorological data remains a cornerstone in safeguarding the environment, boosting food production, and driving effective early warning systems.

He also pointed to ongoing efforts to advance soil mapping, downscale the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), and strengthen capacity across vital sectors through the new partnership.

On his part, Professor Adamu Ahmed commended NiMet’s consistent support for the agricultural sector, particularly through its delivery of accurate and timely weather forecasts.

“Through this partnership with NiMet, we look forward to joint activities in radioactive materials mapping, technical training, and the development of tools and strategies to enhance environmental monitoring, food security, and public safety,” he stated.

The agreement, both parties noted, marks a new chapter in cross-institutional cooperation, as they harness their strengths in meteorology, radiological science and environmental research to drive sustainable development and national preparedness.
