The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Chartered Risk Management Institute of Nigeria (CRMI) have embarked on a collaborative venture to enhance and promote best practices in risk management within NiMet.
This partnership was formalized during a courtesy visit to NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, by Mr. Victor Olannye, Registrar and Chief Executive of CRMI, along with other members of the institute’s Governing Council, on June 27, 2024.
Mr. Olannye outlined the activities and offerings of CRMI, which include various membership tiers, upcoming seminars and conferences, certifications, and comprehensive risk management education.
He acknowledged the significant advancements at NiMet under Professor Anosike’s leadership, highlighting the agency’s role in providing enhanced meteorological services that mitigate aviation and other sectorial risks through timely early warnings and weather and climate information.
He also commended NiMet’s capacity development initiatives for its staff and its growing local and international profile.
“The Chartered Risk Management Institute of Nigeria (CRMI) has been impressed by the progress at NiMet under Professor Charles Anosike. The agency’s initiatives in meteorological services, risk mitigation, and staff development have set a commendable standard.
“Therefore, the Governing Council of CRMI is honored to invite Professor Anosike to join the CRMI Council and is pleased to award him a fellowship of the institute,” Mr. Olannye stated.
In his response, Professor Anosike emphasized the evolving nature of risk management in the context of climate change.
He pointed out that NiMet’s weather and climate forecasts are integral to climate risk management, noting that even financial institutions are now incorporating climate risks into their operations.
He urged CRMI to include climate risk certification in its curriculum to reflect this shift.
“We are excited about the prospect of partnering with CRMI, as this collaboration promises mutual benefits. CRMI can play a crucial role in strengthening NiMet’s risk management processes,” Professor Anosike remarked.
He concluded by saying, “We will consider CRMI’s request for me to join the Council to ensure compliance with our protocols”.
This partnership according to him represents a significant step towards bolstering risk management practices in Nigeria, leveraging the expertise of both NiMet and CRMI to address the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change and other risks.
