The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has formalised a significant partnership with the Ogun State Government to construct an ultramodern weather station at the Ogun State Cargo Airport in Sagamu.

This collaboration was sealed with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday, July 22, 2024.

During the MoU signing ceremony, Professor Charles Anosike, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, emphasized that this partnership aligns with the protocols set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Anosike noted that, according to ICAO guidelines, member states are required to establish and maintain meteorological services, which are provided by their national meteorological offices.

This according to him ensures that aviation operations are supported by accurate and reliable weather information.

He expressed his appreciation for the proactive involvement of the Ogun State Government, particularly commending Prince Adedapo Abiodun, the Executive Governor of Ogun State.

He noted that Governor Abiodun personally engaged with the proceedings of the MoU signing, underscoring the importance of the partnership.

Anosike assured the governor and the people of Ogun State that NiMet is committed to supporting this initiative with the highest level of professionalism.

He further highlighted that the establishment of the weather station is crucial for enhancing the safety, economy, and efficiency of flight operations.

These objectives, he said are in line with the standards stipulated by both the ICAO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Representing Ogun State at the MoU signing, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, the Commissioner for Transportation, expressed his satisfaction with NiMet’s professionalism throughout the process leading up to the agreement.

He was joined by Alhaji I.O. Saka, the Permanent Secretary in the Bureau of Cabinet and Special Services of the Ogun State Government, who also witnessed the signing. Engr. Dairo praised the collaborative effort, acknowledging the dedication of Prof. Anosike and his team in bringing this project to fruition.

The ceremony was also attended by Barr. Shola Gabriel, the Director of Legal Services at NiMet, who played a pivotal role in facilitating the legal framework of the MoU.

This partnership is expected to significantly boost the capabilities of the Ogun State Cargo Airport by providing precise meteorological data crucial for aviation safety and operational efficiency.

The new weather station will enhance the airport’s infrastructure, ensuring that it meets international standards and can support the increasing demands of air traffic in the region.
