To safeguard Nigeria’s climate legacy, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inspected and commissioned its Meteorological Data Rescue Project by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike.

The project, unveiled on Wednesday, is aimed at preserving irreplaceable historical weather and climate records—some dating as far back as the 19th century—that were previously vulnerable to deterioration and permanent loss.

The rescued materials include handwritten observation sheets, ship logs, and early instrumental records that predate modern digital systems and significantly extend Nigeria’s documented climate history.

By recovering, preserving and digitising fragile paper archives and obsolete media, the initiative secures Nigeria’s analogue climate data and guarantees long-term access for scientific, operational and policy use.

The rescued datasets are expected to strengthen climate modelling, improve weather forecasting accuracy, enhance disaster risk reduction strategies, and provide policymakers with deeper historical insights into climate variability and change.

Speaking during the inspection and commissioning, Professor Anosike described the project as “a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future.”

He stressed that the initiative goes beyond record-keeping, noting that it transforms historical climate information into a solid scientific base for climate resilience, sustainable development planning, and the delivery of advanced meteorological services.

The Data Rescue Project aligns with global best practices promoted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and reflects NiMet’s ongoing modernisation and digital transformation drive under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

It also strengthens Nigeria’s footprint in global climate science by making long-term atmospheric data available for modern analysis and international collaboration.

With the successful commissioning of the project, NiMet reinforces its leadership in climate data stewardship, digital preservation, and the strategic deployment of science and technology to support national development, environmental sustainability, and climate-smart decision-making.
