The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day forecast (Friday 21, July to Sunday 23, July, 2023), alerting Nigerians to be wary of the impending heavy rainfall, strong wind and possible thunderstorm in some cities.

According to the forecast which was issued on Thursday July 20, the agency said for Friday, July 31, moderate to heavy rainfall was likely to affect parts of Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Bauchi, Niger, Adamawa, Borno, Bayelsa, Rivers, Imo and Abia States.

“During the forecast period (0000 – 2359hrs, Friday 21th July, Low to Moderate Rainfall is expected over Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Cross River, Enugu, Anambra and Taraba state,” it said.

It added that during the forecast period, 24 hours no hazard is expected but 24 hours accumulated rainfall (10– 20mm) was likely.

NiMET also advised Disaster Risk Management (DRM) authorities to be well informed about the development of the meteorological situation and raise awareness, and for the situation to be monitored closely with National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NHMSs).

According to agency, there are chances of Moderate to Heavy Rainfall on Saturday 22nd July (0000 – 2359 hrs), adding that these chances are over parts of Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Niger and Taraba State  while low to moderate rainfall should be expected over parts of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kwara, Borno, Benue, Adamawa, Taraba, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Cross River State.

Also, during the forecast period (0000 – 2359hrs, Sunday 23rd July), the forecast reveals that there are good chances of Heavy Rainfall especially over parts of Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Cross River and Akwa Ibom State but moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated over Lagos, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Abia, Ebonyi,Taraba, Zamfara, Kano and Plateau States.

For the three days, the NiMet said there is little or no chance of temperature-related hazards across the country due to the low to moderate temperatures that are anticipated but there are good chances of very strong winds to affect parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi States.
