The House of Representatives Committee on Disabilities has called on the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to ensure full enforcement of the provisions of the Nigerians with Disabilities Act, 2018, within the aviation industry.
The Chairman of the Committee on Disability Matters, Dr. Bashiru Dawodu, issued the directive during the Committee’s oversight visit to the NCAA’s corporate headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
The Committee, which has the mandate to oversee compliance with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disability (PWD) Act, 2018, emphasised the importance of ensuring inclusion in employment, accessibility, rehabilitation, and protection of PWDs across all programs, projects, and budgets.
Dr. Dawodu commended the NCAA for its commitment to adhering to the provisions of the Act.
He stated, “As the aviation regulator, the NCAA is responsible for ensuring the enforcement of PWD regulations across all industry agencies, airlines, and operators.”
He further praised the NCAA’s efforts thus far, acknowledging its progress in fostering inclusion through employment opportunities for PWDs, supporting disability initiatives, and enhancing accessibility within the sector.
Captain Chris Najomo, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nigeria, who was represented by Capt. Donald Tonye Spiff, Director of Operations, Licensing, and Training (DOLT), assured the Committee that under his leadership, the NCAA remains committed to being a non-discriminatory, disability-friendly organization.
He highlighted that the NCAA had not only employed persons with disabilities but had also audited its buildings and made necessary adjustments to improve access for PWDs.
Mr. Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, also reiterated the NCAA’s dedication to inclusivity.
He noted that a risk assessment had been conducted and that the implementation of necessary changes is already underway.
“Since Capt. Najomo’s tenure, the NCAA has prioritized addressing the concerns of persons with disabilities, with a strong focus on supporting PWD programs in alignment with his people-oriented policies,” Achimugu added.
During the meeting, various NCAA directorates provided updates on their compliance with the provisions of the Nigerians with Disabilities Act, reflecting their ongoing efforts to ensure accessibility and inclusion within the aviation industry.
