The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has intensified the implementation of quality management standards (QMS) across its departments.

This initiative follows the approval by the DG/CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, for the training of additional personnel as internal auditors by the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), in preparation for migrating to the current International Standard ISO 21001:2018 for Educational Organization Management Systems.

During the ISO 29990:2010 standard internal audit at NiMet’s Regional Training Centre (RTC) in Oshodi, Lagos, Usman Abdulrahman, Head of Quality Management System (QMS) at NiMet, emphasized the agency’s commitment to enhancing staff capacity and service quality.

“Under Professor Charles Anosike’s leadership, NiMet has prioritized staff capacity development and is implementing processes to improve the services we provide,” Abdulrahman stated.

He further explained, “The internal audit of NiMet’s RTC Oshodi, conducted from June 20th to 21st, 2024, against the ISO 29990:2010 standard, ensures that the design, development, and delivery of our learning experiences meet both ISO and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards.

This audit provides a transparent analysis of our programs, including the Basic Meteorological Observation Course (BMOC), Basic Instruction Package for Meteorological Technicians (BIP – MT), Basic Instruction Package for Meteorologists (BIP – M), and other specialized training courses in Meteorology and Agro-meteorology.”

Abdulrahman concluded by noting the broader impact of these standards: “Implementing the ISO 29990 standard at RTC Oshodi provides a unified framework for learning services and lifelong learning experiences for stakeholders in meteorological services across Nigeria, Western Africa, Africa, and other global centers.”
