In a development that highlights the importance of maintaining order in air travel, Ms. Chiamaka Don Ubani, the unruly passenger involved in the recent disturbance on Ibom Air’s flight Q1528, has been formally charged to court by the Nigeria Police.

The charges stem from her disruptive actions that caused a delay in the scheduled departure of the flight, highlighting the ongoing need for passengers to adhere to conduct regulations in airports and aboard aircraft.

According to the charges, Ms. Ubani intentionally and maliciously prevented the aircraft door from closing, which resulted in the obstruction of the flight’s operation.

This action violated Section 436 of the Criminal Code of Akwa Ibom State, which governs such disruptions.

Furthermore, her behavior constituted a public nuisance, obstructing the timely departure of flight Q1528 and causing inconvenience to other passengers. This act is punishable under Section 196(1)(f) of the Criminal Code.

The incident, which took place at the Akwa Ibom Airport, created significant inconvenience for passengers already aboard, delaying the flight’s takeoff and affecting public confidence in the punctuality of air services.

In response, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that air travel remains smooth, safe, and punctual, urging all passengers to refrain from engaging in any behavior that could disrupt flight operations.

Ms. Ubani was released on bail on Friday, January 10, 2025, following her charge. The matter is set to be heard at the Uyo Magistrate Court on February 4, 2025, where further legal proceedings will take place.

The NCAA, through its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, has urged all air travelers to maintain appropriate behavior within terminals and onboard aircraft.

The Authority has reminded the public that unruly conduct can have serious consequences, not only for the individual involved but also for other passengers and the integrity of flight schedules.

In light of the incident, the NCAA has provided multiple contact points for passengers to lodge complaints or report incidents involving unsatisfactory service or unruly behavior.

Complaints can be directed to Michael Achimugu at [email protected], Ifueko Abdulmalik at [email protected], or via [email protected].

The case, stakeholders note, serves as a clear reminder of the importance of respecting the rights of fellow passengers and the need for cooperation to maintain the integrity of the aviation system.
