United Nigeria Airlines has taken delivery of two Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) aircraft as part of its fleet expansion programme, naming the aircraft after the Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty Nnaemeka Achebe, and renowned novelist Chinua Achebe.
The airline said the newly acquired aircraft, bearing registration numbers 5N-CFC and 5N-CFB, arrived at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MM2) in Lagos on June 13 and will be formally unveiled on June 18.

According to the airline, the decision to name the aircraft after the traditional ruler and literary icon reflects a commitment to celebrating Nigerian heritage, leadership and excellence.
In a statement announcing the arrival, United Nigeria Airlines described the aircraft as “flying symbols of legacy, culture and national pride,” noting that the dual dedication honours two personalities whose contributions have left enduring marks on Nigeria and the world.
The airline said the acquisition represents another milestone in its growth strategy and strengthens its position in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Beyond increasing fleet size, the carrier said the aircraft would provide additional seating capacity, enhanced passenger comfort and improved operational reliability at a time when demand for air travel continues to rise.
The formal unveiling ceremony is expected to attract key stakeholders in the aviation sector, including the Obi of Onitsha, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, airline executives and other industry leaders.
Speaking ahead of the arrival, the Chief Commercial Officer of United Nigeria Airlines, Mr. Adedayo Olawuyi, described the development as a significant moment in the airline’s history.
“This aircraft is not just about expanding capacity; it is about telling our story, celebrating our icons, and uniting our people with a renewed sense of pride,” Olawuyi said.
He added that the acquisition underscores the airline’s ambition to deepen its footprint in the domestic and regional aviation markets while promoting Nigerian values on the global stage.
Olawuyi further described the arrival of the aircraft as “a defining chapter in the airline’s growth journey and a proud statement of Nigerian excellence taking flight.”
The Boeing 737-800 is one of the most widely used commercial aircraft globally, known for its fuel efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort.
United Nigeria Airlines said the aircraft will boost its operational capacity and support plans to expand its route network across Nigeria, the West African region and other international destinations.
The airline reiterated its commitment to providing safe, seamless and world-class services while pursuing further regional and long-haul expansion in the years ahead.
