The Ghanaian High Commissioner to Nigeria and Permanent Representative to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ambassador Sadiq Abdulai Abu, has praised United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) for its efficient service on the Accra-Abuja route.
Abu made the commendation when a delegation from UNA, led by its Director of Administration, Mr. Linus Awute, paid a courtesy visit to the Ghana High Commission in Abuja on Wednesday, September 10, 2026.
The visit was aimed at formally welcoming the envoy to Nigeria and conveying the goodwill of UNA’s management and board.
The meeting was particularly significant because Abu’s first flight into Nigeria after resuming his diplomatic assignment was aboard United Nigeria Airlines.
Speaking on behalf of UNA’s Executive Chairman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Awute congratulated the High Commissioner and conveyed the airline’s goodwill to him.
He also spoke of Okonkwo’s longstanding relationship with Ghanaian President John Mahama, stressing the airline’s commitment to strengthening the historic relationship between Ghana and Nigeria.
Awute said the strong presence of Ghanaian nationals in UNA’s workforce was another reflection of the close ties between the two countries.
He explained that several Ghanaian employees occupy important positions within the airline and contribute to its operations, safety and service delivery.
Responding, Abu thanked the UNA delegation for the visit and praised the airline’s performance on the Accra route.
He expressed interest in building a stronger working relationship between the Ghana High Commission and the airline.
The envoy also informed the delegation of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary, which will be celebrated on March 6, 2027, and invited UNA to consider partnership opportunities around the activities.
He further asked the airline to consider providing a special corporate travel package for staff of the High Commission, as well as supporting arrangements for official cargo.
Awute welcomed the requests and said the airline was ready to explore areas of cooperation with the commission.
Presenting a signature gift to the High Commissioner, Awute restated UNA’s commitment to strengthening relations between Ghana and Nigeria through its air connectivity.
He said the airline would continue to use its Accra-Nigeria operations to promote diplomatic, economic, business and cultural relations, as well as people-to-people ties, in line with its philosophy, “Flying to Unite.”
