Nigeria’s aviation drive received a major boost on Saturday as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, joined Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, to launch the first international flight from Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, to Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana.
The historic take-off marked the official commencement of international flight operations from Uyo, a development expected to strengthen Akwa Ibom’s position as an emerging gateway for regional and global travel.
The inaugural service was celebrated by government officials, aviation stakeholders and passengers, who described the event as the opening of a new chapter for air transport in the state and Nigeria at large.
According to a statement issued by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, the new route reflects growing investment in aviation infrastructure and expanding connectivity across the country.

The statement said the achievement is “not just a commendable development for the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State but a shining example of subnational commitment to the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for economic diversification and connectivity.”
Industry observers believe the new international route will unlock fresh opportunities in tourism, commerce and foreign investment, while deepening business ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
The direct service is also expected to create jobs across the aviation value chain, from airport services and logistics to hospitality and travel agencies.
For Akwa Ibom residents and businesses, the route offers easier access to Ghana and other connecting destinations, reducing travel stress and improving convenience for passengers in the South-South region.
The Uyo-Accra launch adds to efforts by the Federal Government to expand airport utilisation, improve route networks and position Nigeria as a stronger aviation hub in West Africa.
With the successful inaugural flight, stakeholders say Victor Attah International Airport is now poised to play a bigger role in regional integration and cross-border economic activity.
