The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, contrary to initial concerns sparked by the presence of smoke within the terminal.
In an update issued on Sunday, the authority said preliminary investigations revealed that the smoke was caused by the activation of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system, rather than a fire incident.
According to FAAN, the circumstances that triggered the automatic discharge of the fire suppression system are still being investigated.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” the authority stated.
FAAN disclosed that normal flight and passenger operations have resumed at the terminal following the incident, while technical teams continue investigations to determine the exact cause of the system’s activation.
The authority assured passengers, airlines and other airport users that safety was never compromised and pledged to keep the public informed as more details emerge from the ongoing probe.
It also expressed appreciation to passengers, airline operators and other stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the incident.
“Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, while detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident,” FAAN said.
The airport authority reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest safety and security standards across all airports under its management, stressing that every incident is treated with utmost seriousness to ensure the continued protection of passengers, workers and airport facilities.
The clarification followed an earlier advisory issued by FAAN after smoke was detected at the terminal, prompting immediate emergency response measures and raising concerns among travellers.
Sunday’s update effectively ruled out reports of a fire outbreak, attributing the incident instead to the discharge of the terminal’s fire suppression system.
