Nigeria’s aviation sector took a confident step forward on Friday night as industry leaders, regulators and policymakers gathered to celebrate progress, resilience and a shared vision for growth at the 15th Nigeria Aviation (NIGAV) Awards and Ministerial Dinner.
Delivering a keynote address, the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Captain Chris Najomo, struck an optimistic tone, describing the industry as firmly on the path of renewal, driven by deliberate reforms, stronger collaboration and measurable results.
Speaking before an audience that included representatives of the Enugu State Government, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and top industry executives, the NCAA boss said the awards have evolved into a powerful symbol of excellence and accountability within the sector.
“The NIGAV Awards has become a beacon of transparency and industry cohesion, celebrating the very best of Nigerian aviation while inspiring continuous improvement across all facets of our ecosystem,” he said.
This year’s theme, “Industry Rebirth,” framed the evening’s message: a sector emerging stronger from past headwinds and repositioning itself for sustainable growth.
According to the NCAA chief, recent milestones point to tangible progress.
These include the consolidation of aircraft leasing frameworks aimed at easing fleet acquisition, the certification of aerodromes to meet international safety benchmarks, and ongoing modernization projects at major gateways such as Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
He also highlighted improvements in intermodal connectivity, as well as a steady expansion in airline fleets and route networks, developments he said are gradually restoring confidence among investors and passengers alike.
“These gains are not accidental. They are the result of clear policy direction, institutional alignment and visionary leadership committed to repositioning the sector,” he noted.
Central to that transformation, he said, is the reform agenda led by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, whose efforts were recognised at the event with an “All-Time Champion of Aviation Growth” award.
The NCAA boss praised the minister’s focus on stakeholder engagement and regulatory clarity, noting that such policies have created a more enabling environment for both domestic operators and international partners.
“The commitment to reform and inclusiveness continues to strengthen the foundation for regulatory excellence and industry expansion,” he said.
The speech also underscored the growing role of state governments in aviation development. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, represented at the event, was honoured as Aviation Supporting Governor of the Year, an acknowledgment of subnational contributions to infrastructure and connectivity.
“State-level investments are critical to unlocking the full potential of aviation as a driver of economic growth and regional integration,” the DGCA said.
In a moment that drew applause from the audience, the NCAA chief himself was named Aviation CEO of the Year.
He described the recognition as a collective achievement, crediting the authority’s staff for their professionalism and dedication.
“I accept this honour not as a personal accolade, but as a testament to the hard work and commitment of the entire NCAA team.
“Their efforts continue to uphold Nigeria’s reputation as a safe and globally respected aviation system.”
He reaffirmed the authority’s core mandate: ensuring safety, security, economic regulation and consumer protection in line with global best practices.
The DGCA commended the NIGAV Awards Committee for sustaining the initiative over 15 years, noting its role in promoting integrity and rewarding excellence across the industry.
“By recognising performance and inspiring higher standards, this platform continues to chart a bold path for the rebirth of Nigerian aviation,” he said.
