In a defining moment for Nigeria’s aviation industry, Capt Joan Obasi, Chief Pilot of United Nigeria Airlines, has been named Female Pilot of the Year at the 15th Nigeria Aviation Awards and Ministerial Dinner.

The recognition accentuates her growing influence as one of the sector’s most respected flight leaders.

The award, presented on April 17 at the NiGAV Centre, Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, drew top aviation stakeholders, regulators, and industry professionals, all gathered to celebrate excellence, safety, and innovation across Nigeria’s air transport ecosystem.
Obasi’s recognition reflects more than individual brilliance, it also highlights a career defined by precision, discipline and a relentless commitment to safety.

As Chief Pilot, she plays a critical role in shaping operational standards, overseeing pilot training, and ensuring strict regulatory compliance.

Her leadership has been pivotal in reinforcing a culture of safety and professionalism within United Nigeria Airlines, a carrier steadily building a reputation for operational reliability.

Event organizers confirmed that Obasi topped the public voting category after emerging from a competitive nomination pool, signaling both industry respect and strong public endorsement of her achievements.

Though absent from the ceremony due to ongoing overseas professional training, Obasi’s presence was strongly felt. The award was received on her behalf by Folake Marcetic, a First Officer with the airline, who delivered a message capturing both humility and ambition.

“This award is a tribute to the collective discipline of my team at United Nigeria Airlines,” Obasi said in her statement. “It is also a message to every aspiring female aviator that the sky is no longer a limit, but a workplace where competence is the only currency.”

She described the honor as both a personal milestone and a call to greater service, expressing gratitude to her colleagues, the airline’s management, and members of the public who supported her nomination. More importantly, she framed the recognition as part of a broader mission, to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of aviation across Nigeria and the African continent.

In its official response, United Nigeria Airlines praised Obasi as a consummate professional whose leadership continues to inspire confidence across the flight deck and beyond.

The airline noted that her achievement reflects its core investment in human capital development, safety systems, and inclusive growth.

Her emergence as Female Pilot of the Year also carries wider significance. In an industry historically dominated by men, Obasi’s rise reinforces a gradual but undeniable shift, one where merit, skill, and leadership are redefining traditional boundaries.

For many young women eyeing careers in aviation, her story stands as both proof of possibility and a powerful call to action.
